Keeping Arahoe Clean

Lately a group of Room 15 children have decided to clean up Arahoe School by picking up rubbish! This is what they collected one afternoon. Great job guys!

Building the new classroom

Yesterday Mrs Sutton's Yr3 writing group came and read us a story they have written about the new classrooms being built at Arahoe. We liked how they had put the words in different places around the page. We learnt funny sounding new words like 'dumpy'.

Have a look at the book by clicking on the link below!

Harakeke Flowers

We have been learning about harakeke (flax) and today we made harakeke flowers by folding the harakeke over itself.
We made sure that when we harvested the harakeke from the plant  we didn't cut the centre leaf ( rito or the baby), the leaves around it that are the awhi rito (or the parents - awhi means to embrace) or the outside leaves which are the tupuna (grandparents).  We cut the tupuna  leaves.

Garden Visit

On Wednesday we visited Zach's house as part of our 'Green Fingers' topic. His street was part of a special initiative where fruit trees were planted all down the street and at the reserve down the bottom of the street.. When we arrived at Zach's house we walked past strawberries, figs and grapes to his backyard where we saw many different fruit and vegetable plants, a worm farm and his pet chickens. At the end of our visit we were surprised with fruit kebabs to eat!

Eden Gardens Trip

We visited the Eden Gardens as part of our 'Green Fingers' topic. The garden was "a maze of beautiful flowers and trees" (student) We walked for over an hour and ended at the top of a big hill where we coud see Rangitoto!

Welcome back Roscoe!

A special welcome back to Roscoe who accidently got scratched by his dog while playing with her. We were very worried about him. He was very brave and even had to have an operation and get stitches! He came back to school today to show us a photo of him in hospital. Glad to have you back Roscoe :)

Solar Eclipse 14.11.2012

On the 14th November the moon passed between the Sun and Earth and we saw it!! We made pin hole cameras and went out side at 9:18 to see the shadow of the moon in the Sun. As we wrote about it in our books we had the live streaming playing on the projector. We were very excited to witness such a special event!

Swimming

Swimming for room 15 starts next week, week 4! Room 15's swimming day is Tuesday and we will be swimming from 2-3pm. On our swimming day we need to bring our togs and towel in a swimming bag and hang it next to our bag. To make sure we do not misplace anything, we need to make sure everything is named.

Art outside

For Art this week we thought about what Art is and what you need for Art.  Today we left all our pencils and paper in the class and went outside to create art out of sticks and bark in the playground.  Have a look at the awesome pictures we made.

Planting time...

This week we did some some gardening! We planted four different types of seeds; radish, lettuce, water-cress and purple basil! We dug a hole and covered the seeds in dirt. Our 'plant-sitters' take the planting trays out into the sun at lunchtimes and water the seeds at the end of the day. Now all we have to do is wait and watch them grow.

Moving to the beat

Today we learnt that we don't need to have instruments to make music. We had lots of fun using this website to mix sounds, beats, and effects to make a song. Click on the link below to give it a go!

News for the day

Today we read an article about a HUGE pumpkin that weighed 805 kgs. It won a competition in Oregon, United states. We found out that the pumpkin weighed as many as 30 Leahs or 28 Eves. How many of you would weigh the same as the pumpkin?
